Ontario Winter Tire Insurance Discount: How to Save Up to 5%

Since 2016, every auto insurer in Ontario is required to offer a discount to drivers who install winter tires. For Brampton and GTA West drivers, that can mean real savings every year — on top of the safety benefit. Here is how the winter tire insurance discount works and how to claim it.

How much can you save?

Most insurers offer a discount of up to about 5% on your auto premium when you run winter tires. The exact amount varies by company, so it is always worth asking your broker or insurer directly.

What qualifies for the discount

• A full set of four winter tires — not two, and not all-season tires.
• Tires marked with the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, which certifies them for severe snow. Many all-weather tires carry this symbol and may also qualify.
• The tires generally need to be installed for the winter season. Most insurers expect them on roughly from December through March, so confirm the exact dates with your insurer.

All-season tires (marked only M+S) do not qualify. If you are unsure whether your tires carry the 3PMSF symbol, our team can check for you.

How to claim it

1. Buy and install a full set of 3PMSF winter or all-weather tires.
2. Keep your receipt — your insurer will want proof of purchase and installation.
3. Call your broker or insurer and ask them to apply the winter tire discount to your policy.
