When to Install Winter Tires in Ontario (The 7°C Rule)

Every autumn, drivers across Brampton and the GTA West ask the same question: when should I switch to winter tires? The clearest answer is not a date on the calendar — it is a temperature. Here is the simple rule the team at Atika Auto Parts uses.
The 7°C rule
Once the daily temperature consistently drops to around 7°C or below, the rubber in all-season and summer tires begins to harden and lose grip — even on dry pavement. Winter tires use a softer compound and special siping that stays flexible in the cold, so they grip, corner and brake far better once it gets chilly. That is why you should fit winter tires based on temperature, not on the first snowfall.
Best install and removal dates for Ontario
- Install: late October to mid-November, when overnight temperatures settle near 7°C. Do not wait for the first storm — that is when every shop is busiest.
- Remove: early April, once daytime temperatures are reliably above 7°C. Running winter tires through the warm spring wears them out quickly.
Why timing matters
Fitting winter tires early keeps you safe on cold, wet and icy roads through Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon, Halton and Vaughan. It also protects your investment: alternating between a winter set and an all-season set means each set lasts roughly twice as long, because you are not wearing one set down all year.
