All-Weather vs All-Season Tires: Which Is Right for Ontario?

All-weather and all-season tires sound almost identical, but for Ontario winters the difference is important. If you drive in Brampton, Mississauga or anywhere across the GTA West, here is what sets them apart and how to choose.

All-season tires

Despite the name, all-season tires are really three-season tires. They handle dry roads, rain and light snow well in mild temperatures, but their rubber hardens once it gets close to 7°C, reducing grip on cold, snowy and icy roads. They carry an M+S (mud and snow) marking but are not certified for severe snow.

All-weather tires

All-weather tires are built to stay capable year-round. Crucially, they carry the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, meaning they are certified for severe snow. You can leave them on all year, and because they meet the 3PMSF standard they typically qualify for the Ontario winter tire insurance discount.

Which should you choose?

• All-weather — ideal if you want one set of tires year-round, do not want to swap twice a year, and still need genuine winter capability for GTA West conditions.
• Dedicated winter tires — still the safest choice for the coldest weather, deep snow and ice, with the shortest braking distances. Best paired with a separate all-season or summer set.
• All-season — fine only if you rarely drive in real winter conditions and park indoors.

A note on studded tires

Studded tires are not permitted in Southern Ontario, including Brampton and the GTA, so a modern studless winter or 3PMSF all-weather tire is the right choice for our region.
