275/65R20 Tires

What 275/65R20 means

The 275/65R20 marking is three measurements: 275 is the tread width in millimetres, 65 is the aspect ratio — the sidewall height as a percentage of that width — and 20″ is the wheel rim it mounts on.

The numbers for this size

These follow from the size itself: sidewall is 275 × 65%, and the overall diameter is the 20″ rim plus that sidewall twice over. The revolutions figure is what your speedometer is calibrated against — fit a size with a noticeably different diameter and the reading drifts.

How 275/65R20 drives

This is a tall-sidewall fitment. There is a good depth of rubber between the road and the rim, so it rides softly and survives potholes far better than a low-profile — the trade-off is slightly softer turn-in.

At 275 mm this is a wide tyre: more contact patch means more dry grip and shorter stopping distances, at the cost of a little fuel economy and a tendency to follow ruts in worn pavement.

On a 20-inch wheel, replacement cost is higher than on a smaller rim, so getting the pressure right and rotating on schedule pays back more here than on a 16-inch fitment.
