Tire Maintenance Guide: Make Your Tires Last Longer

Good tire maintenance is one of the easiest ways to drive safer and get the most kilometres out of your tires, yet it is often the most overlooked part of car care here in Brampton and across the GTA West. Whether you commute on the 401 or 407, run errands around Mississauga, or head up to Caledon on the weekend, a few simple habits will keep your tires rolling smoothly for longer. Check Your Air Pressure (Cold and Correct)

Under-inflated tires wear out faster, waste fuel, and handle poorly — while over-inflation gives you a harsh ride and uneven wear in the centre of the tread. The fix is simple: check your pressure regularly.

• Check when the tires are cold — before driving, or at least three hours after, so heat from the road hasn’t changed the reading.
• Use the PSI listed on the door-jamb sticker or owner’s manual, not the maximum number printed on the tire sidewall.
• Remember that Ontario’s temperature swings matter: pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 5°C the air cools, so a cold snap can leave you running low overnight.
• Don’t forget the spare, and reset your TPMS warning light if it stays on after topping up.

The Toonie Tread-Depth Test

Tread is what grips the road, channels away water, and bites into snow. As it wears down, stopping distances grow — especially on the wet, slushy roads we see all winter in the GTA West. You can check tread depth at home with a Canadian toonie:

1. Slide the toonie into a tread groove with the silver bear pointing down.
2. If the tread reaches the silver edge of the coin, you have plenty of tread left.
3. If it reaches the letters, you are about halfway worn — start planning ahead.
4. If it only reaches the paw, your tires are nearly bald and it’s time to replace them.

Rotate, Align, and Balance on Schedule

Front and rear tires wear at different rates, so rotating them keeps that wear even and extends the life of the whole set.

• Rotation: every 8,000–10,000 km, or roughly every other oil change, is a good rhythm for most vehicles.
• Wheel alignment: if your car pulls to one side, the steering wheel sits off-centre, or you see feathered wear on one edge, you likely need an alignment — common after hitting one of our infamous GTA potholes.
• Balancing: a vibration in the steering wheel or seat at highway speed usually means a wheel is out of balance.

Watch for Uneven Wear, Cracks, and Bulges

• Bulges or blisters, which signal internal damage and a real risk of a blowout — replace these right away.
• Embedded nails, screws, or stones that should be removed and patched properly.

Seasonal Storage and Swaps

If you run a separate set of winter tires and all-season tires — a smart move in Ontario — how you store the off-season set matters just as much as the maintenance above.

• Clean off road salt and brake dust, then let them dry fully.
• Store them in a cool, dry, dark spot away from direct sunlight, ozone sources, and furnaces.
• Stack tires without rims flat, or hang tires mounted on rims to avoid flat-spotting.
• Label each tire’s position so you can rotate correctly at the next swap.
