Tire Repair: Plug vs Patch, and When a Tire Cannot Be Saved

You find a nail in your tread. The question is immediate and practical: repair or replace? The answer depends on where the damage is, how big it is, and how it is fixed — and there is a lot of bad advice about all three.
The Three Kinds of Repair
The plug
A rubber-impregnated cord pushed into the puncture from the outside, usually without removing the tire from the rim. It is fast and cheap, which is why roadside kits use it.
It is also, on its own, a temporary measure. A plug seals the hole but does not repair the inner liner, and it does not let anyone inspect the inside of the tire for damage the object caused while it was in there.
The patch
A patch applied to the inner liner from inside the tire. This requires dismounting the tire, which means the interior can be properly inspected. Better — but a patch alone seals the liner while leaving the puncture channel through the tread open to moisture, which can corrode the steel belts over time.
The combination repair (the correct one)
A one-piece patch-plug: the stem fills the puncture channel and the patch seals the inner liner, applied from inside after inspection. This is the repair recognised by the tire industry as a proper permanent fix.
If a shop offers to fix a puncture without taking the tire off the rim, they are giving you a plug. That is fine to get you home. It is not a repair.
The Repairable Area
Only the crown of the tire — the central tread area — can be repaired. As a rule:
- Repairable: punctures in the central tread region, generally up to about 6 mm in diameter.
- Not repairable: anything in the sidewall or the shoulder.
The reason is flex. The sidewall and shoulder bend constantly as the tire rotates and loads up in corners. No patch will survive that flexing indefinitely, and a failure there is a sudden failure. A shop that refuses to repair your sidewall is not upselling you — they are correct.
When the Answer Is Always Replace
- Any sidewall or shoulder damage, including cuts, gouges and bulges.
- A bulge or bubble anywhere. That is internal structural damage, usually from a pothole impact. See pothole damage.
- Driving on it flat. Even a short distance can destroy the internal structure. The tire may look fine and be ruined.
- A puncture larger than about 6 mm, or a long slice rather than a round hole.
- Overlapping repairs, or a puncture too close to an existing repair.
- Tread already near the wear bars. Not worth repairing a tire that is nearly finished anyway.
- An old tire. If the date code is approaching ten years, replace rather than repair.
What About Run-Flats?
Run-flat repairability is restricted and manufacturer-dependent, largely because a run-flat may have been driven on while deflated — which is the entire point of the design — and that driving may have caused internal damage that is not visible. Many manufacturers do not permit repair at all. See run-flat tires explained.
What About Sealant in a Can?
Aerosol sealants will get you moving in an emergency and that has genuine value on a dark shoulder of the 410. But treat it strictly as a get-home measure. Tell the shop you used it — some sealants make a subsequent proper repair difficult and they make a mess of TPMS sensors. See our TPMS guide.
If You Do Replace: One Tire or More?
On a front- or rear-wheel-drive car with the other three tires reasonably fresh, replacing one is usually acceptable — but fit it in a pair on the same axle if wear differs much. On all-wheel drive, the tolerances are much tighter and replacing one tire can damage the drivetrain. Frequently Asked Questions
Is a tire plug safe permanently?
No. A plug on its own is a temporary measure. It seals the hole from the outside without repairing the inner liner and without allowing inspection of the tire interior. A proper permanent repair is a combination patch-plug fitted from inside.
Can a sidewall puncture be repaired?
No. The sidewall and shoulder flex constantly as the tire rotates, and no repair will hold reliably in that area. A sidewall puncture, cut or bulge always means replacement.
How big a puncture can be repaired?
Generally up to about 6 mm in diameter, and only in the central tread area. Larger holes, long slices and anything outside the crown of the tire cannot be safely repaired.
Can I repair a tire twice?
Sometimes, if the repairs are well separated and both are in the repairable area. Overlapping repairs or punctures close to an existing repair are not acceptable.
Is it safe to drive on a tire after using sealant?
Only to get to a shop. Aerosol sealant is an emergency measure, not a repair. Tell the technician you used it, as some sealants complicate a proper repair and can affect TPMS sensors.
Can run-flat tires be repaired?
Often not. Because a run-flat may have been driven on while deflated, internal damage may exist that cannot be seen. Repairability depends on the manufacturer and many do not permit it.
