Tires for Work Vans & Small Fleets in the GTA: A Practical Guide

Published 12 Aug 2026 · Atika Auto Parts

Drive through any industrial park in Brampton, Mississauga or Vaughan and you will see them lined up: Ford Transits, Mercedes Sprinters, Ram ProMasters, GMC Savanas. Work vans are the circulation system of the GTA economy — and their tires carry tools, stock and deadlines through 60,000 km years that would exhaust most passenger tires in half the time.

This guide is for the people who run them: owner-operators, trades, delivery businesses and small fleet managers.

C-Type and LT Tires Are Not a Suggestion

Most full-size vans specify a commercial-rated tire — marked LT (Light Truck) before the size or C after it, with a load range letter like C, D or E. These carcasses have stiffer sidewalls and higher load capacity than the passenger tire in the same printed size.

Fitting a cheaper passenger tire in the same size on a loaded van is the most dangerous economy in the tire world: it overheats under load, wears out fast, and in a claim your insurer will notice the placard mismatch. Match the placard — the same rule we explain in load index and speed rating, with higher stakes.

What Kills Van Tires in the GTA

  • Uneven loading. A van with the heavy stock always on one side wears that side of the tires first. Rotate more often than a car — every 8,000 km is not too much. See why rotation matters.
  • Curbs and docks. Sidewall scuffing at loading docks and tight sites is death by a thousand cuts. Walk around the van weekly; a bulge means the tire is finished.
  • Pressure neglect. Commercial pressures are high — often 55 to 80 psi rear on a loaded E-range tire — and a 10 psi shortfall is invisible to the eye. Weekly checks pay for themselves in casing life and fuel.
  • GTA potholes, which do not distinguish between a family sedan and your livelihood. What potholes do to tires applies double at 2,800 kg.

Winter Is a Business Decision

A van that cannot move does not earn. Rear-wheel-drive Sprinters and Savanas in particular are nearly helpless on packed snow with worn all-seasons. For vans that must run through January — couriers, trades on call, airport work — dedicated winter LT tires or a 3PMSF-rated commercial all-weather are the difference between invoicing and apologising. Our Ontario winter tire guide covers the rules; the business case you already know.

Small Fleets: Stop Buying Tires One Emergency at a Time

The most expensive way to buy tires is one at a time, on the day a van is stuck. Fleets of even three or four vehicles benefit from planning:

  • Standardise sizes where the fleet allows, so one spare set covers several vans.
  • Track tread depth quarterly — a 60-second job with a gauge — and schedule replacements in slow weeks rather than during breakdowns.
  • Set up a dealer account. Atika Auto Parts offers volume pricing for GTA businesses, with delivery to your yard so tires arrive instead of costing a driver half a day. Details in our wholesale tire pricing guide, or register on the sign-up page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need LT tires on my work van?

If the door placard specifies an LT or C-type size, yes — it is a load-capacity requirement, not a preference. Passenger tires in the same printed size carry significantly less weight and overheat under commercial loads.

How long do commercial van tires last?

A quality LT tire on a well-maintained van typically runs 50,000 to 80,000 km. Overloading, low pressure and skipped rotations can halve that.

Do you deliver tires to business addresses in the GTA?

Yes. We deliver brand-new tires from our Brampton warehouse across the GTA, including to shops, yards and units — free within 15 km of our location, with a flat per-city charge elsewhere in the GTA.

Can a small fleet get wholesale pricing?

Yes. Register for a dealer account with your business details and we will confirm volume pricing once the account is reviewed. Garages, trades, couriers and lots across the GTA already buy this way.
