All-Season vs Winter Tires: What Ontario Drivers Really Need

Published 26 May 2026 · Atika Auto Parts

If you drive in Brampton, Mississauga or anywhere across the GTA West, one of the most common questions we hear at Atika Auto Parts is simple: do I really need winter tires, or are all-season tires enough? The honest answer depends on how and where you drive.

What all-season tires are good at

All-season tires are built as a year-round compromise. They handle dry roads, rain and light snow reasonably well and save you from swapping tires twice a year. For a driver who only sees occasional light snow and parks indoors, a quality all-season tire can be a sensible choice.

Why winter tires win once it gets cold

Once temperatures drop below about 7°C, all-season rubber hardens and loses grip — even on dry pavement. Winter tires use a softer compound and aggressive siping that stays flexible in the cold, dramatically shortening braking distances on snow and ice. On the hills around Caledon or icy 401/407 commutes through Halton and Vaughan, that difference is what stops you short of the car ahead.

Our recommendation for GTA West

For most Ontario drivers we recommend a dedicated set of winter tires from late November through March, and all-season (or all-weather 3PMSF) tires the rest of the year. It is safer and your tires actually last longer because you are not wearing one set year-round.
